"It's Father's Day"
Did you know that Father's Day was founded in Spokane, Washington, in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas? Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA. Her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there.
We could probably come up with more historical information about the day, but that is not what I found interesting when I was looking at this "holiday." What I found interesting is that with each generation it seems that "Father's Day" is becoming a less popular event/holiday - and the reason for that seems to be that fathers (at least in this country) are becoming more absent from the family unit. There are so many different reasons for this that it would be difficult to name them all... or probably understand them all... and that is not really the reason for this article.
The thing that is really interesting (at least to me) is that God identifies himself as a father! In John 14:6, Jesus says, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through me." Then in verse 9, Jesus says, "He who has seen Me has seen the Father..." Maybe, just maybe, if we talked more about imitating our Heavenly Father; maybe if we realized that seeing Jesus meant seeing the Father; maybe if we tried to pattern ourselves after the one who patterned Himself after the Father... maybe then we could understand.
THIS IS THE DAY THAT OUR FATHER HAS MADE; I WILL REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT!
